The Guardian Newspaper have given their readers the first chapter of the book before release as a taster. You can read and listen to the first chapter here.
My thoughts so far:
Go Set A Watchman starts off with Jean Louise Finch, also known as Scout from the first book, on a train. She is travelling back to her home town of Maycomb to see her family.
The first chapter sets up the book perfectly, with the same tone of Scout we are used to from the first book. We get to learn about what has happened since she has been gone and characters that will and won’t be featured throughout this novel.
As a child Scout was also fierce and up for a challenge, and it appears in this book she is more fiery than ever before, wanting to ‘play till she’s thirty’. The first chapter gives away minor details but does not hint as to what could happen later on in the book, unlike the first chapter of ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’.
As much as I loved the first novel I am apprehensive as to whether or not I am going to enjoy the second, but I plan on doing a full review of the book once it has been published. For now I can just speculate as to what is going to happen.
